Ciao tutti! I have been lucky enough to conduct my internship in Rome, Italy this summer and I can’t believe I only have three weeks left. I have been working at Fondazione Santa Lucia, which is a rehabilitation center. They have everything from brain trauma and stroke units, to rehabilitation for children with developmental delays and rare genetic disorders. I have been working with the kiddos. This has been very interesting because I have never been exposed to developmental medicine before. It is amazing how certain therapies can have such an impact, such as helping with walking, eating, attention, and speaking.
My day-to-day mostly consists of shadowing the therapists during their sessions with the children. This can be really fun because they do a lot of game-based therapy with the kids so we don’t have to be so serious all the time. My supervisor has been very kind in trying to help me understand the Italian National Healthcare System. However, every time she introduces me to someone new and explains that this is my project, they chuckle, showing you how complex the system is. I have also been spending a lot of time in the library on the hospital campus, which has a lot of sources I can use to write my SIP.
I live about a 20-minute bus ride from the city-center (when the bus comes on time that is), and I have been enjoying different areas of Rome. I always think it is so crazy that I am living among such history. The best day I had in the city was exploring hidden streets outside of the main center, away from many of the tourists. There were many hidden restaurants and boutiques and an amazing market by the water. Later in the afternoon various street musicians began to play and the whole area felt very magical. I am excited to see what the last few weeks hold.
